    AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) are pleased to announce that the AHA and the BJCP have merged our competition programs, so as of January 2006, there is a single system for registering homebrew competitions.

In merging the competition programs, we have combined the best of both. The competition materials have been updated to incorporate aspects of both programs to provide competition organizers with the best information and forms available to run successful competitions.

    By combining our resources, we:

    • Reduce confusion caused by having two separate competition registration systems
    • Provide updated competition materials
    • Provide a uniform set of competition score sheets and forms
    • Provide an improved means of promoting and marketing ALL competitions

The AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program is designed to help make organizing homebrewing competitions easy and fun. In addition, the Sanctioned Competition Program establishes competition standards and procedures that assure homebrewers that their beers are handled and judged in the best possible fashion, and that the results are accurate, meaningful, and educational.

The primary goals of the AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program are:

    • To help promote homebrewing and homebrew competitions.
    • To make organizing homebrew competitions easier and more rewarding.
    • To give entrants valuable feedback on the attributes of their beer as perceived by the most qualified judges available.
    • To bring consistency to homebrew competitions. AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competitions are organized with a foundation of guidelines, judges, and a standardized scoring system. The BJCP supplies lists of area BJCP judges for sanctioned competitions and awards judging points for judges participating in AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competitions.
    • To provide the forum for judges to practice the art of beer evaluation.

AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition Program materials include:

    • judge list for your region (emailed to you by the BJCP)
    • judge mailing labels
    • BJCP Style Guidelines
    • beer, mead, and cider score sheets
    • cover sheet
    • judge manual
    • entry form
    • bottle identification forms

    • judging procedures manual
