    Agenda

The BJCP reception is our annual gathering of judges at NHC. Part thank-you for turning out to judge and part educational seminar, these events have been very popular in past years. This year we will have food at the reception; a Mexican fiesta-themed buffet is planned. Four educational seminars will form the program. Due to hotel requirements, we need to segregate the program into two sessions so that homebrew and commercial beer are not served at the same time. The homebrew session will be first, followed by the commercial beer session.

    1:30 - 2:00: Early NHC Judge Check-in

2:00 - 2:05: Welcome and Overview (Eric Holden, organizer)

    Session 1: Homebrew served

    2:05 - 2:35: Buffet - Mexican Fiesta

2:35 - 2:50 Seminar 1: How to Judge the NHC

Bruce Buerger, Judge Director for NHC 2015, will provide a brief overview of what to expect from the NHC Judging process. The scoresheets are quite different than a normal long form BJCP score sheet and this will be a time to go over a “How To”. This will be given during the end of the buffet. Sample scoresheets provided.

2:50 - 3:30 Seminar 2: New Hops and Hopping Techniques

Ted Hausotter, Grand Master II Judge. Many new experimental hops are now making their way to kettle. With all these new variety it can be tough for a judge to know what to expect to smell/taste when presented with something like “Mandarina Bavaria.” Ted will be going over new hops and techniques and tasting session. 4 local brewers will be brewing to Ted’s guidelines.

    Session 2: Commercial Beer/Mead Served

    3:30 - 4:15 Seminar 3: Exploring American Wild Ales

Andrew Bell (Experimental Brewer for The Bruery and Bruery Terreux and Certified Judge) will be giving an overview and tasting of the new BJCP category “American Wild Ales”. Brett Beer, Mixed Fermentation Sour Beer, and Soured Fruit Beer will all be discussed and tasted. The Bruery will provide tasting of these three styles.

4:15 - 5:00 Seminar 4: Guide on How to Properly Taste, Judge and Evaluate Mead

Michael Fairbrother (Founder & Head Mead Maker Moonlight Meadery, President American Mead Makers Association, National Judge). Many times judges end up on the Mead panel and it's their first time tasting mead. Michael will be giving an overview and tasting on how to properly taste, judge and evaluate multiple styles of mead. Moonlight Meadery will be providing samples.

    5:00 End of Reception
